Business travelers are made, not born. And almost everyone who travel frequently for work can list at least a few things Desire They knew when they first entered the game. Is not all obvious – as the importance of committing with POINT AND MILETH PROGRAM early; These programs literally exist because of you, dear business travelers – and some of them are nuanced and only learned over time, how to find a hotel that feels at home and lets you leave a suit in the closet.
To collect the rules of the road, we chatted with very spontivized business travelers about what they wanted someone wisely told them at the beginning of everything. These sources come from many lines of work and marches – mouse directors who know who gala -clothing are easiest to pack, private capital and corporate laws that prefer Boutique hotelsSpecialists on young communications who have learned to find the love affair in everything, and so on. (Many people we interviewed asked to use pseudonym-this is a difficult hit!-What will you see reflected below.)
Read on for their tips and tricks on a successful business trip.
Work trip is not a leisure trip
It is excited when work sends you to remote places you always wanted to visit-but don’t let the novelty cheat you think you are on vacation. “My first pairs of jobs took me EuropeWho was very exciting for a fresh-el-university twenty, “says Zelda, a specialist in communication from the International Council of Pure Transportation.” Being a young man who could not afford a transatlantic flight and three-star hotel rooms during my Dime, I immediately felt the need to extract most of the experience. That pressure, combined with the actual work I needed to do during the trip, was a recipe for burning. ”
You need to do your job, and do it well, to continue to be sent into job trips. And you will probably run out thanks to the route, interconnection and drinking, all of which are reliable elements of her business travel. Make sure that work, and rest, is your priority, before finding time for sights and moments of leisure in your afternoons. To that end …

Prioritize rest
“I gave up trying most of the hours directly around my needed work, because I really need those times to rest,” Zelda says. “A fantastic hotel room should enjoy so far. Bathtub? A pool? Spa? Even just sleep or watch TV in newly changed sheets. Charli XCx says it best: everything is romantic. “Give yourself a break, especially if you are on the clock for longer hours than when you are at home.
Opportunity is not a king – loyalty is
Frequent business travelers are the reason Points, miles and loyalty programs There is, and not using them just hurts you. This may feel less true in recent years, as it is known to gain status at a single airline. But most agree that the following remains true: the moment when it becomes clear that travel will be a large part of your job, choose an airline alliance and lock the loyalty program.
When Lucie, now a partner of New York City Consultation Company based, first started traveling a lot for work, she reserved, any airline had the most appropriate departure. “I acknowledged not in that game as early as I should be, and then I noticed the money I left on the table.” Now, she has “crazy” Delta Status This makes her personal travel essentially free, she says.
Delta, among the sources in this story, is far away the favorite, with a united not so close behind. But if you wonder Which airline has the best reward programPaul, a corporate lawyer, watches the situation and says it’s not always so simple: “Some airlines are clearly better than others, and it’s fluent. Right now I have better offers from American Airlines than United or Delta.” Which brings another point: even if you are loyal to one airline, register with all and collect points wherever you can.
Reserve flight times strategically
Give yourself the luxury of time and reserve your flight to arrive the day before you have to trade. You don’t have to take that red eye. Rahul Khosla of Heady.io says, “It makes it easy for the trip, yes, but it is much easier to keep your routine in this way and feel sharper for the meeting [or work event] self. [Otherwise] Eating becomes strange, sleep is interrupted, and you probably won’t have time to go to the gym because you will be too tired. Still one flow of flight early – I’m not so emphasized if delays happen because I know I don’t cut it very closely. ”
Clear and TSA -Precheck are not -negotiable
“I don’t know if you can call yourself a wise business traveler without them,” says Paul about programs as clear and Tsa precheck This helps speed up travelers travel through airport safety. The lines at most airports are long and only longer, and the living room sits on the other hand waiting for you. Divide the annual fee by the amount of times you traveled last year and see how little it will really cost you. (And, if you have a great credit card, the fee could even be given away.)
For the best shot at an update, book prize -economy
Regardless of your status, it is unlikely, according to my sources, that you will update from a basic economy into business. But a prize? This is when they see you. This is when they may move you up. And if they don’t, you already have a prize. It’s hard to regret.
Always ask the update but be very polite about it
That second part is key. You have nothing to lose when you ask for an update, whether this is from the aforementioned prize to business or from standard hotel room to Executive Suite. But it is also true that you will catch more flies with honey: door agents and hotel receivers are the guards of the keys, they have seen it all, and they become arbitrary. If you approach them even with the right, they will clock and you lose. Humble yourself, business traveler. “I have some outrageous updates just to ask well,” one private stock man tells me.

Use the pack cubes
While there is a pure split between Checking bags and carrying themIn no space were these sources more unanimous than in their exulture of Package cubes. Almost everyone I spoke, brought them organically, including Carl FriedrikCo -founder of Niklas Oppermann (and not just because his company sells them). “I do it in a type of clothes,” he says, “and then you can use one or two for a dirty sink while the trip is progressing. I’m a convert to packing cubes.”
Do not take a jet -lake lightweight
Jet lay down It is the ban on the existence of the business traveler. Some cases are worse than others, but it always lasts to some degree in the shadow of those who change time zones. Tips on how to best deal with varies, but there is a consent around one particular strategy: adopt the time zone of your destination at the moment you will board your flight. “So, if you land at 9 in the morning wherever you go, you have to act like it’s a night on the plane, even if it’s not where you go,” Dei Executive Yentil Rawlinson of Sherwin-Williams tell me. “There is a need for evil and the only thing I tried to work.” Some travelers even manually restore their phone to the time zone of their destination at the aircraft’s entry, to start adjusting. However, you can deceive yourself, trust that your body will follow.
Find a hotel that can feel at home
I know we said that loyalty is everything, and for airlines it is absolutely. It is equally difficult to deny the power to earn these large brand points at hotels, which many travelers use to earn a luxury stay (ideally, during their personal travel in the future). But while you are unexpected and immovable, go for something that feels like a version of home to you. “I generally prefer to stay in independent hotels because they get to know you for repeated visits,” says Paul. “If you stay at a big brand, it’s hard-the meeting rooms at these places are not as good as they were before. In London, I used to stay at the Chiltern before it burned. He would even leave a suit and tie there. While many such real estate are not part of loyal programs, World of Hyatt has brought Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and the shop farms available on his backup platform, under the Hyatt Sill this year -so it is possible to earn points while staying a shop.
You can spend those world hotel services so use them
One of the most valuable lessons that a former general manager taught Rawlinson was to hand over your clothes to the hotel pressing service to the arrival. “If you go four or five days, keep one clothes and press the rest,” she says. “And finally, let them all dry cleaned so you just pack clean clothes.”
Build your wrinkle-free closet
Mariet Westerman, Director of the Guggenheimwears one of her favorite outfits for travel when she talks to me. It is by Theory. “They make these really lightweight clothes you almost never have to dry.” When things become more formal, Gala for example, she trusts one mark: Missoni. “Missoni just doesn’t scream – they have the crackets they need, and that’s the way.” For the boys, most observe that costumes have been removed from their package list altogether. They instead bring black or sea pants and black or sea shirts.

Your gymnastic shoes are also your walking shoes and your casual office shoes
You need one pair of shoes that can do everything. Numerous people I have spoken, swear by the cooperative sneaker between New Balance and Aimé Leon Dore for this correct multipurpose.
The hotel gym is an extension of the workplace
Bring a beautiful gymnastics clothesPeople – is that your boss will be at the wheelchair next to yours. “You don’t want to appear in Ratty Gym Shorts,” Netflix’s Bianca Consunji tells me. “I speak through experience. You also want to bring headphonesto signal that there is a time you want for yourself. ”
Talk to your co -workers – especially when they are the locals
Whether they are joint congressmen or co-workers from the office abroad, the people who live in the destination, you travel to carry the best recommendations for a low-key, off-hit way to do after the working day is done. Westermann from Guggenheim was in Hong Kong With a locally based colleague, and they had a lot of time to spend together. He said to her, “Let’s go for a walk in the warehouse district, and you’ll see a different demographic.” They walked and took the subway, as was his preference, instead of chopping sheds; This showed her the city again.
Lucie spent six months in MelbourneAustralia, early in her career and entered her team there – she never needed Google recommendation. Khosla’s approach is similarly simple: “I try to catch local sports wherever I am. I have a customer outside Dallasfor example, and last time I traveled there, I went to rodeo with my colleague. Seeing sports, live or at a local bar, is a good way to get a vibration from a different place in just a few hours, and it’s also a good way to link with customers or potential customers. ”
Keep your humanity
Listing what enters her toilet bag, Lucie tells me, “I just feel more like me when I have my perfume.” It’s a little aside that gets something bigger: traveling a ton for work costs your personal life, so it is important to find a few ways to get back to yourself.
Smith says, “I like to eat meals myself to be centered again. It helps for a few reasons: I take care of me, which is difficult to remember to do when you work in a new environment; and it is based, almost meditatively, draws attention to your senses. I just love to crack myself.” When that is not enough, sometimes the most important thing is to just go home your own bed as soon as you can.
