How did you get into fashion first?
Gabe Gordon: I’ve always been Project runway When I was a kid, I would watch it with my mom. We used to have this dog and my mom was like, “Her brindle reminded me of the Minoni sweater,” which trapped me in sweaters, textiles and knitting. I was also a painter when I was a kid, so I went to RISD and studied textile design. This is a good conversation between the two.
Timothy Gibbons: I’ve been going back to my love of returning to Halloween as a kid. I’m Irish, and that’s where Halloween was born – it’s a Celtic tradition – so from a very young age, I always make costumes with my aunt and big family. I’ve been doing things so much that all my photos as a kid were taken in October or during the peak of summer, and I was wearing some kind of outfit. When I was looking for higher education, I applied to Central St. Martin in London for higher education, and I took costume and performance classes.
What made you decide to launch the tag?
GG: I started when I was in school. Me and Gauntlett Cheng One summer, I was working Forgot about the cafe. I think they’re just excited about my work and I’m a student who’s willing to sell some of my work in the store, which just attracted a lot of eyes from their store and some other retailers got it. This Los Angeles-based store, now in New York, is now selling the brand in New York, and then celebrities start wearing it and see Kardashians wearing my work…I’m still a student, so I was like, “Oh my god, what happened!” and Ssense started giving some orders. It was really fun and exciting, and the challenge was to start a business, not really get to know the students and try to make the most of my degree. I graduated in 2022 and came to New York right away and just did this full-time job, but it was impossible, I had no idea what I was doing and had no business background, so I took a break for a season to reevaluate. I realized I wanted to keep doing the work and immediately met Timothy and that was just a magical opportunity. We realized we wanted to do this together.
