Meta CTO Andrew “Boz” Bosworth, who was one of the company’s first 15 engineers, released a self earlier this year forecasting that 2025 could be the year of size for Reality Labs, the company’s increased and virtual reality unit. Or, it would be the year when the metaiter would go down as a “legendary misdeed.”
These days, Boz seems to be inclined to his potential for size. But the market will be the final determinant.
“We’ll judge at the end of the decade, but this feels like the pivotal year,” Boz said on Thursday during a Bloomberg interview.
Boz noted that Ray Ban Ai eyeglasses of Meta was a breakthrough, which aroused both consumers and competitors. From February, Meta sold More than 2 million pairs Since their October 2023 debut. Last fall, they External traditional radio bansEven before Meta invented AIs.
Meanwhile, Google last month announced partnerships with a mild monster and Warby Parker to Create smart glasses Based on Android XR. Reportedly Apple is pushing forward Release smart glasses in 2026.
“Suddenly, we go from effort in the kingdoms of obscurity to very much in the world with a product very attractive to consumers, and so competitors,” Boz said. “The clock started competition, and that just means that the progress we make this year has a disproportionate value to any year before or after it closes.”
However, competition among other officials means nothing if the market does not adopt the AR and VR products of META, which would cause the industry to standardize the technology.
“The market is actually, especially when it comes to hardware, a drag indicator,” Boz said. “So you are looking for early indicators. To some degree, you must have a level of confidence and taste in a house.”
He said this was something he learned from Sheryl Sandberg, a former general official at Meta.
“Sheryl used to always talk about how most companies don’t fail because they were beaten by a competitor,” Boz said. “Most companies fail because they have not fulfilled their own plan correct [whether] We meet our standards. ”
The Meta CTO said the company has a “set of ambitious plans for the year” for which it is on the road.
“What we will know by the end of the year is whether we have fulfilled our plan or not,” said Boz. “What we will know in five years is whether that was enough.”
