The video shows some fans trying to climb up the vent to get in. Police had to lift the distressed kids up to avoid being crushed, while police elsewhere caught on the ground without ticket fans they could catch, who might try to avoid hoarding.
But this summer things are different.
“We have taken extensive measures to protect fans, players and staff,” Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said before the game. “The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office is leading all the security efforts of this global event.”
Changes over the past year mean that fans of this game must go through three separate checkpoints to surround the entire campus before approaching the stadium. Steel fences are set up around the surroundings.
The first is a ticketing check on a temporary gate that takes up most of the parking lot where the tailgate parties usually occur. Then there was another airport-style screening under the tent, and the X-ray machine inspected the bag. Even the sign needs approval.

“When I entered the finals, the security guards just opened the door and started to get people through,” Edison Negron, a Puerto Rico-based Boca Juniors fan, told the Associated Press last year when he described the scene as a fan’s description of the obstacle.
Miami-Dade County said at the time that a comprehensive review would be conducted and that the scene “cannot happen again.”
“The law enforcement and security footprints within and around the stadium will ensure public safety for all incidents,” Det said, adding that social media was monitored before the game.
Preparations include special training for rapid deployment forces, part of a multi-agency response to the troubles of potential populations.
“If things go south, we’re ready for civil unrest and unruly fans,” the sheriff’s office said in a social media post.
So far, there are a lot of police presence in both games at Hard Rock – Saturday’s tournament opener, when more than 60,000 people watched the Monday game between Inter Miami vs. Al Ahly, and the Monday game between Boca Juniors and Benfica, in front of nearly 56,000 people.
