On July 2, Netflix and Skydance will finally release The old guard 2The long -awaited consequence of the 2020 activity starring Charlize Theron as Immortal warrior protecting humanity. Prior to the release, IO9 captured returning stars Kiki Layne, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Marwan Kenzari, as well as franchised newcomer Henry Golding (Crazy rich Asians,, Snake eyes), talk about a step back into the brutal, secret world of the Image Comics universe And what it took to bring its next chapter to life.
Isaiah Colbert, IO9: Nile’s development from a wide eye recruit to an experienced immortal occupies the stage in this movie. What aspects of her growth – with the grace of her action sequences or the deepening ties with her team – were the most rewarding for you to live?
Kiki Layne: Certainly the growth of the Nile physically. The stunts I had to do, the choreography, having a weapon, was really fun to push my physics to new levels for the second movie. That was definitely the most outstanding for me for the Nile’s trip this time.
Io9: Joe and Nicky’s bond continues to anchore the heart of this story. How did you and Luca Marinelli navigate the development of their dynamics, balanceing their centuries -old intimacy with a renewed sense of purpose as they face the film’s growing threats together?
Marwan Kenzari: To be honest with you, we develop our friendship. We speak permanently. If [Marinelli] It’s in his trailer, I’ll visit him. We will sit and spend an hour or two together talking about so many different things and aspects of life that we finally automatically brought that [with us] When the camera rolls. That’s just a gift we have. We don’t have to pretend that we love each other. I really love this man. That makes it easier to work.
Io9: Since the first film, Copley has been transformed from a reluctant ally to a dead fighting shoulder to shoulder with immortals as an integral member of the crew. How to step into that more physically required role – while still bore the weight of its humanity – challenges or deepened your performance this time?
Chiwetel ejiofor: I enjoyed it. In the first, I got a little bored that I stood on the edge of all the action. They arrived to get involved [and] Have fun. I was very excited when I read the script, and it was like, “Oh, Copley comes in this now?” That’s great. He sometimes needs a tap on his shoulder – people tell him he’s not immortal either. I love the idea of him – not just in the technical sense – to help the team organize and deal with operations with their expertise. The actual boarding on the field and really intermingling is a really great addition to Copley’s character.
Io9: Tuah marks your entry into an ensemble stacked with action heavy weights. Coming from your main role in Snake eyesYou are not strange to intense choreography, but how did you find your rhythm on this team? And there were some moments as a whole that reminded you only as physically demanding The old guardianThe world can be compared to Gi joe‘?
Henry Golding: I was a big fan of the first movie. I think an open sequence down in the deadly room was phenomenal. It was an action we really didn’t see. The design of it was so visceral. I knew we would bring some choreography back. Unfortunately I didn’t get as much as I would like, but what I got was so fun to participate. The great thing about The old guardian is the balance. The true story is the human aspect to live as immortal. The action is the consequence of the world around them. Finding that balance is crucial. It was absolutely fun to get in.

IO9: This movie had a longer way to release than expected, with delays and solutions delaying its timeline. Faced with these production challenges, what helped you all gather as a cast and crew to keep the energy and focus alive, and your links to your characters?
Ejiofor: Movies take the time they take. As an actor and cast, you are always excited to participate. We know these characters now in a way where it is not EasyBut it’s good to jump back. We are always able to jump back into things, and I think everyone understands that making movies is complex. Sometimes they take a little longer, and you have to count how to do it, and that’s great.
io9: the battle in The old guard 2 aims to be more intense and personal. How have you all prepared for sequences this time?
Kenzari: As Chiwetel mentioned, it is part of your muscle memory. The choreography comes the Stunt team, you go through them, and you improve them – you increase speed. It’s a fun part of the pre -production of a shooting day, where, in the end, you just want to master the choreography as best I can. That’s how we prepared the first part, and so we worked [part two]- Only that choreography is different and more than what we had in the first.
IO9: If you could enter some iconic movie movies against each other in an immortal struggle like Charlize Theron and Uma Thurman, who would you like to see a square?
Kenzari: A good question.
Layne: Uma against Charlize is enough up.
Ejiofor: Atomic blond against Predator Arnie. That’s what I would like to see – by hand. Remove the guns.
Kenzari: Predator Arnie is good.
Golding: I like that.
Kenzari: Skin on skin.
Everyone: (laughs)
Ejiofor: Devil.
Golding: How do you hit that? Next question.
Kenzari: Makes Home alone Count as an actor?
Everyone: (laughs)
IO9: Five years have passed since fans first met the guard. What do you hope that hearing takes away from this chapter, not just to satisfy that long wait, but to remind them of why this story was worth holding?
Kenzari: All the mortality, an immortal element is a huge highway in the arch of the story in this one. I think that’s the question, even with us in the last days of interviews. It is the question that continues to return: what would you rather have [in] Is one of these two? So much in the movie is about that fragile, sensitive aspect of people healing and not healing – killing and not being able to die – there is something the audience will consider after the end of the film.
Ejiofor: I think they are great characters, and I think you’ll remember and missed – these excellent characters and this incredible team. And there are things to think about. There are philosophical questions there and deep emotional resonances with their history. There’s a lot there.
