Schaefer played only 17 games last year before breaking his collarbone in December, but his acuity at both ends of the ice still pushes him to the top of nearly all draft boards.

Schaefer is just the fifth defensive player in the NHL draft since 2000, the first game Owen Power went to Buffalo in 2021.

The Islanders won the lottery, picking for the first time in a talented draft.

Although Schaefer clearly stands out, there is no absolute No. 1 pick in the field.

The draft also lacks a centralized format for the staple foods that have long been this year’s practice. The various executives of the 32 teams are mainly at home, not in the draft of the Peacock Theatre in downtown Los Angeles.
