An an an Open letter By authors including Lauren Groff, Lev Grossman, RF Kuang, Dennis Lehane, and Geoffrey Maguire calls a book -Publishers to promise to limit their use of AIs, for example by compromise only to hire human audiobooks.
The letter argues that the work of authors were “stolen” by AI companies: “Instead of paying writers a small percentage of the money our work does for them, someone else will pay for technology built on our unpaid work.”
Among other commitments, the authors call on publishers to “make a promise that they will never publish books created by a machine” and “will not replace their human personnel with AIs or degrade their positions in AI monitors.”
While the initial letter was signed by an already impressive list of writers, NPR reports That another 1,100 signatures were added in the 24 hours after it was initially issued.
Authors also pursue technology companies to use their books to train AI models, but federal judges dealt with important blows to those processes Earlier this week.
