President Donald Trump has said he has Tiktok buyer Tiktok, a video sharing app banned in the United States because it claims it poses national security risks.
Trump said in a Fox News interview that he had a group of “very wealthy people” willing to get the platform. “I’ll tell you in about two weeks,” he laughed.
The sale will require approval from the Chinese government, but Trump told Fox that he believes President Xi Jinping “may do it.”
This month, Trump delayed the enforcement of the law for the sale of Tiktok for the third time.
The latest extension requires the parent company’s barbarians to reach a deal to sell the platform by September 17.
The BBC has contacted Tiktok for comment.
A previous deal to sell Tiktok to U.S. buyers collapsed in April when the White House clashed with Chinese tariffs with Trump.
Current buyer Trump said it is unclear whether the people he has lined up as those who were waiting on the wings three months ago.
Congress passed a law that forced Tiktok to sell in April last year, with lawmakers worried that the app or its parent company might hand over U.S. user data to the Chinese government, which Tiktok denied.
Trump criticized the app in his first semester, but he believes it was a factor in his 2024 election victory and now supports its continued use in the United States.
The law was supposed to take effect on January 19, but Trump repeatedly delayed enforcement through executive actions, which have drawn criticism from lawmakers who criticized Congressional lawmakers.
Tiktok has questioned the constitutionality of the law but has lost its appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
