Draw in space Continuing Gormley’s decades of investigation into the human body and the field, viewing the human body as a porous, responsive form to explore our perception, navigation and ultimately embodied spaces. The inquiry found its most ambitious ground expression, with an underground dome located below the museum’s garden.
The structure evokes the architectural spirit of the Pantheon and the similar meditation talent of Ando Light space. The 25-meter-wide chamber has a unique Oculus that can cast light across the entire space. Inside, seven cast iron figures from Gormley piece The series appears to sit, crouch and stand, with the last number located in the center of the hole, standing outside against the background of the distant forest mountain range.
Other highlights of the exhibition include the “Restricted Field”, where the form of steel bubbles explores the instantaneous properties of the body, and the rings of aluminum flowers of “Road Field II”. The works on paper complement Gormley’s sculptural practices as a meditative study of light, mass, and internality.
Gomley explained that the purpose is to bring “the space of body and imagination together.” “These works will activate rather than occupy space and explore the walls of the architecture and the body.”
