Pet lion’s owner was arrested after big cat attacks three people


Pakistani police arrested the owner of a pet lion who attacked a woman and her three children after escaping.

Dramatic CCTV footage from the eastern city of Lahore shows how the big cat jumped over the concrete wall and chased the woman’s horrific bystander ran away for safety.

The five- and seven-year-old woman and her child had injured their arms and face but were in stable condition.

Police accused the lion owner of keeping wildlife without a permit and negligence, causing wildlife to escape. The lion was captured and moved to a wildlife park.

Big cats as pets are a status symbol in Pakistan, and it is legal to keep lions, cheetahs, tigers, pumas and jaguars there after registering them and paying a one-time fee of Rs 50,000 ($176; £129).

The children’s father claimed that the lion’s owner surrounded his pet and caught his family on Wednesday. He said they did not do anything to limit it.

The video shows the woman lifting her head and running, seeking help from onlookers, some of whom were running in panic.

A few days after the incident, authorities in Punjab launched a crackdown on illegal wildlife property. Since then, they have arrested five people and recovered 13 lions.
