Artificial intelligence semiconductor startup Groq announced on Monday that it has built its first data center in Europe as it strengthens its international expansion.
GROQ, invested by Samsung and Ciscosaid the data center will be located in Helsinki, Finland, with quinix.
Groq hopes to take advantage of the growing demand for AI services in Europe by other U.S. companies, which has also intensified investment in the region. Nordic especially is a popular location for data facilities, as the region has easy access to renewable energy and cool climates. last month, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang is in Europe, Several infrastructure deals signedincluding data centers.
Groq, worth $2.8 billion, designed what the company calls a language processing unit (LPU). It is for inference rather than training. Inference is when pre-trained AI models interpret real-time data to come up with results, just like the answers produced by popular chatbots.
While NVIDIA has a shackle on the chips needed to train huge AI models with its graphics processing units (GPUs), there is a range of startups looking to get a small portion of the inference. Sambanova; Ampere, a SoftBank company is buying; both cerebellum and molecules want to join the AI reasoning contest.
European politicians have been pushing the concept of sovereign AI, which must be located in the region. A data center close to users also helps to speed up service.
Equinix, a global data center builder, connects different cloud providers, such as Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud, to make it easier for businesses to have multiple vendors. GROQ’s LPU will be installed in the Equinix data center, allowing enterprises to access Groq’s inference capabilities through Equinix.
GROQ currently has data centers in technology in the United States, Canada and Saudi Arabia.
