An Italian sniffing dog was killed after eating sausages filled with nails, his coach said.
Bruno is a seven-year-old hunting dog who is known as a hero for finding nine missing persons in his career and has been honored by the Italian Prime Minister.
She said Giorgia Meloni condemned the “evil, cowardly, unacceptable” killings in the post on X. “Thank you for everything you do, Bruno.
Dogs’ coach Arcangelo Caressa said he knew who was responsible and vowed to make them pay for their actions.
Some people have suggested that the murder was due to the fact that Bruno’s character’s revenge was to remove the dog fighting ring.
“I passed away with you today,” Casas said in a Facebook post announcing Bruno’s death.
He said he found the dog – he said he saw “brothers” in the doghouse at the Endas Search and Rescue Training Center in Taranto Puglia on Friday morning.
“You have fought all your life to save humanity and are now someone who does this to you,” he added. “You are, you are, and you will continue to be my hero.”
The coach said the Italian police and prosecutor’s office had conducted a joint investigation into the killings.
“I know who you are, and you’ll pay for it,” Caressa said of the culprit.
He told local media that there had been death threats within weeks of Bruno’s death.
He told the Corriere Della Sera newspaper: “It’s not a random gesture. They want me to go aside. But I will never succumb. It’s an evil attack, done for money and revenge.”
Italian MP and animal rights activist Michela Vittoria Brambilla urged police to bring those responsible to justice.
She suggested that Bruno was the target of the criminal because of his role in seizing the dogs used in the battle.
The new law, led by Brambilla, could punish anyone who uses torture to kill animals, imprisonment for up to four years and fined €60,000 (£51,000).
Brambilla called for the law to be applied because of the internal bleeding “long-term painful death” caused by Bruno’s once nail-filled sausage.
“We owe this noble animal,” she said in a statement.
