Blockage CEO Jack Dorsey spent the weekend with Bitchat, a new decentralized, peer-to-peer messaging app that works perfectly over a Bluetooth network network without the internet, central server, phone number or email.

Bitchat allows for short, encrypted communication between nearby devices. As users move through physical space, their phones form local Bluetooth clusters and deliver messages from the device to the device, allowing them to go beyond the standard range of peering, even without WiFi or cells.
Some “bridge” devices connect overlapping clusters, expanding the grid over a larger distance. Messages are stored only on the device, disappear by default, and never touch the centralized infrastructure – a continuous development of long-standing privacy-protected, censor-resistant communication with Dorsey.
The launch is based on his Damus and Bluesky support and reflects a broader driving force for everything from social media to payments.
Just like the Bluetooth-based application used during this period 2019 protests in Hong KongBitchat aims to continue working even if the internet is blocked, provides a censorship-resistant way to stay in touch during interruptions, closures or surveillance.
The app also supports optional group chat or “room” that can be named with a tag and password protected. It includes storage and forward functions to deliver messages to users who are temporarily offline.
Future updates will add WiFi Direct to increase speed and range, further driving Dorsey’s vision for off-grid, user-owned communications.
Different from mainstream messaging platforms YuanWhatsApp and Messenger, owned by large tech companies and rely on personal data, Bitchat operates entirely without an account, without an identifier and without data collection.
