Pop culture idols increasingly find their place in academia as their stories provide a powerful framework for teaching core concepts and increasing student engagement. In particular, this course will explore Lamar’s life and music through an African-centered lens–study the socioeconomic and cultural conditions of his hometown of Compton and the impact of urban policies on the subjects in his work.
Students will delve into Dot’s lyrical genius, uncovering the development of his storytelling, voice and social commentary. The course will also invite speakers who work closely with Lamar and provide first-hand insights into his creative journey, cultural influence and legacy in music.
