A group of Gen Z diners learned a difficult and unexpected lesson on restaurant pricing after unconsciously ordering Steak marked “Mkt” – In the end, it paid a high price.
A young woman named Aribella Menold posted a Tiktok video about the ordeal in June. She’s in North Carolina Restaurants When they decided to order two steaks, they brought her siblings with them.
Their total bill is $159, which includes a 3% credit card surcharge and a 6.75% business tax.

On Tiktok, the video elicits a reaction from sympathy to critical.

The scam stunned the restaurant waitress as the diner laughed in her face: “Why is this the norm?”
Another said: “If you have to ask about the market price, you can’t afford it.
However, Zers’ Gen isn’t the only one who is unfamiliar with the name “MKT”.

A cynical person replied: “MKT means it’s a scam and they can charge you any ideas.”
But is the market a scam pricing or is it a way for restaurants to do business when they offer premium goods?
“Please feel free to ask the server for the price.”

The Florida-based business director said some restaurants choose to market pricing because premium items “can vary widely in size and prices throughout the year.”
“This volatility is affected by factors such as seasonal availability, market demand and procurement conditions,” he said.

He also encourages customers to stay informed and not be shy when asking servers, rather than shy lobster rolls or high-end steak costs.
“At Smokey Bones, our servers are trained to inform guests of the price of items marked as market prices, so there have never been any surprises on the bill,” he said.
