Welcome to Eye on Ai! In this issue ...Openai publishes GPT-5 and makes a 1-dollar contract for $ 1. Ai homework helper duke it out. Zoox receives a special exception.
One of the defining truths about the world of generative AI is that the leadership, even if they are at the top, does not take long.
And so the two most important questions that come from Openaai from Openai are from GPT-5, whether the new LLM can help the company to regain the undisputed AI leader-and if so, how long can Openaai keep the lead?
According to Openaai, GPT-5 provides “more precise answers than any previous argumentation model” and is “much more intelligent”, which is reflected in the strong performance of academic and human-evaluated benchmarks. In his research blog, new state-of-the-art performance in mathematics, coding and health issues and found that GPT-5 surpasses other Openai models over 40 professions, including law, logistics, sales and engineering.
“GPT-5 really has the feeling that you speak to a doctoral expert in every topic,” said the CEO of Openaai, Sam Altman, journalists in a pre-brochure on Wednesday. “Something like GPT-5 would be quite unimaginable in history in any other time.”
Altman described GPT-5 as a “significant step” on the way to artificial general intelligence (AGI), which, according to the Openai’s mission statement, is “defined by highly autonomous systems that exceed people with the most economically valuable work”.
However, it is unclear whether this combination of speed, performance and characteristics is sufficient. About two years in the creation (GPT-4 was introduced in March 2023), the start of GPT-5 took longer than many industry experts expected, as Openaai did Hired his approach in response to changes in the industry. And while Chatgpt now has an impressive 700 million weekly users, Openai has exposed growing pressure last year, since rivals re-select his talent and start up on emerging AI techniques such as long-contained argument and autonomous tool use. In addition to large tech competitors Meta And GoogleThere is a wave of startups founded by the former researchers of Openai, including anthropic, memory and safe superintelligence. And of course there is the new harvest of powerful Chinese models like Deepseekcompete for global influence.
Whether GPT-5 Openai will break back to the top of the AI hill will be clear in the coming days and weeks, since the researchers are running the model on the street and test it against other elite models, including the latest Claude model from Anthropic and Google’s Gemini.
Openai presses to stay at the top
With GPT-5, the CEO of Openaai, Sam Altman, admitted that the stay at the border means one: relentless scaling.
In AI, scaling refers to the idea that models become more powerful if they increase the amount of data, computing power and model components used during training. It is the underlying principle that the progress from GPT-2 to GPT-4-and now GPT-5-Fuhr. The catch is that every jump requires more investments, especially in the AI
When asked whether the scaling laws are still holding, Altman said that they “do it absolutely”. He referred to better models, more intelligent architectures, data with higher quality and significant computing power than a way to improve the improvement.
But this type of progress is guaranteed. “It will need eyelash,” he admitted. “But we intend to continue doing it.”
Of course, this requires a massive amount of money and partnerships.
On the bright side, Openai has roughly doubled its sales in the first seven months of 2025 and reached an annualized running price of $ 12 billion – of around 6 billion US Report according to the information. This corresponds to monthly income of 1 billion US dollars, which are heated by increasing demand for chatt products on consumer and company markets. Weekly active users for Chatgpt rose to around 700 million, from 500 million in all Openai products at the end of March. And early this week Openai published a free open source model-A unusual step for a company that is often criticized in the past half decades because of its closed approach-and the trust that its premium offer, which is now GPT-5, will continue to dominate.
But there are some major challenges in front of us. On the one hand, the partnership between Microsoft And Openaai – This began in 2019 with an investment of 1 billion US dollars – entering a sacred and more complex phase. While Microsoft has invested more than 13 billion US dollars and retains exclusive rights for Openai models by Azure, tensions have emerged through income participation, AGI control clauses and overlapping product strategies. And the Stargate project is dependent on partnerships with companies such as Softbank, the investment regulations of which are still unresolved to revise its corporate structure.
There is much more to say about GPT-5. Just 90 minutes before the model was published, journalists received the complete materials from Openai, including a research blog, a system card and a security card, so I have much more to do. Stay tuned for more!
In addition: In less than a month I will go to Park City, Utah, to take part in our annual Brainstorm conference in the assembly Deer Valley! The place is limited. So if you are interested in joining, Register here. I can only recommend that there is a fantastic series of speakers, including Ashley Kramer, Chief Revenue Officer from Openaai. John Furer, President and CEO of Walmart Us; Tony Xu, founder and CEO of Doordash; And many, many more!
This makes the rest of the AI messages.

AI in the news
Openai concludes a 1 -dollar government contract. Openaai has concluded a contract with the US government in order to grant federal authorities access to their border -KI models -including Chatgpt -for only 1 US dollar next year, according to the General Services Administration (GSA). The partnership reflects for months behind the scenes of the Openai CEO Sam Altman and his team, who have returned to the White House since Donald Trump’s return in January. In an explanation WiredAltman has framed the agreement as part of President Trump’s AI campaign plan and said that it would help the officials to use AI to better serve the American people.
Ai homework helper duke it out. A week after Openaai published a chatta study mode, Google got on with a new KI tutor Guided learning mode. According to Google, it worked closely with learning experts, teachers and students to develop guided learning that is integrated in Gemini. Like Chatgpt’s study mode, Google’s learned learning is intended to encourage users to work through problems through “examination and open questions” instead of just spitting out the answers. With classes at many schools and universities that are supposed to begin in the coming weeks, the big question will be whether students actually want a AI study companion or are satisfied with a AI response.
Zoox receives a steering wheel exemption. The development of the Robotaxi took one step forward on Wednesday US federal supervisory authorities gave permission for the Zoox from Amazon To test self -driving shuttles without a steering wheel, pedals or other manual controls. The move eliminates a point of unclear in the self -driving automotive industry. While the Zoox had previously claimed that his vehicles were the norms of the state that corresponded to the rules of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, it seemed that this was not the case. The move of the NHTSA makes it clear that self-driving cars in the United States actually need manual controls to operate on public roads (even for testing), but ZOOX grants an exception-and it opens the door for other robotaxi companies like Tesla in order to maintain a waiver.
