A long -awaited proposal of the FAA yesterday is the way for the drone to take flight

Yesterday was a big deal for drone delivery junkies. Transport Minister Sean Duffy presented a rule that the drone industry has been waiting for for over a decade.

It’s called “Bvlos” or beyond the visual line of sight. At the moment you are not allowed to fly drones without a person observing the drone for the duration of your flight (there are any exceptions and declarations of disposal that you can receive, but these can be expensive and it takes a long time to get it). In other words, it is quite difficult for companies like Amazon or Ups to create deliveries regularly in a inexpensive manner.

The new rule should change all of this and pave the way for companies such as A16Z-supported ZiplineAlphabet’s wing and of course the main air from Amazon to finally scale your operations. And it means that we all come a step closer to send our treats and food from the sky.

I called James Grimsley, Executive Director of Advanced Technology Initiatives for the Choctaw Nation, to talk about the milestone yesterday. Grimsley, who supervises the drone efforts of the Choctaw Tribe and the piece of land in which the company come, to test and fly, was one of the people who ultimately used the creation of the report that the FAA ultimately used to write the rule and has followed this in detail in the past 20 years of his career.

“This is a transformation rule,” he tells me. “It’s a pretty big step.”

Without getting bored with too many political information, it is worth noting that this rule proposal has been a market shift in the FAA in the past 100 years. According to Grimsley, this rule should be adaptable and can be relocated with the technology speed – a realization that the technological regulation and permits are the technological risk that there is a technological risk of being too outdated when it can be implemented. Instead of issuing a prescribed checklist for companies, the FAA will grant permits based on “industry consensus standards”, according to the FAA fact sheet.

“Now we have a somewhat clearer way for the investment community – at least that’s my point of view,” says Grimsley.

Although not everyone will be enthusiastic about the FAA that paves the way for more drones to drive through our sky. The presence of drones has Alarm caused in communities – and the buzzing sound has sometimes become A nuisance.

We are already starting to see how these new Bvlos rules will surrender. In Dallas, Alphabet subsidiaries and the startup Flytrex have worked closely with the FAA for cooperation – an automated delivery system in the same areas and shows how several companies can provide data for the same airspace at the same time with humans to get involved.

The new rule is expected to come into force in early 2026, but companies are already preparing for this.

“This creates the basis for really scalable drone operations in the USA,” says Alex Norman, head of global flight operations and services at the Drone Company Matternet.
