In the entire S&P 500, the CEOs of women spent 32% more often in a role as President before they were appointed Chief Executive. Citi boss Jane Fraser, Clorox CEO Linda RendleADP boss Maria Black, and Otis boss Judith Marks are just a few of the women who sail on the way up as president.
Men have skipped this step more often and went directly from a business unit to CEO. Twenty -nine percent of male CEOs came from a business department, while only 23% of female CEOs (female CEOs) (Accounter CEO Julie Süß and Expedia CEO Ariane Gorin are two among them).
Seventeen percent of men went from COO to CEO, while only 8% of women did (like AMD Chief Lisa are). CFO is a role that has proven to be a solid start pad for women – 10% of female CEOs were CFO right beforehand (how and how Best Buy CEO Corry Barry), while only 6% of the male CEOs were.
The additional step that women make on their way to the CEO suggests that they often have to prove further to be ready for the top job, “says Andrea Silbert, President of the EOS Foundation. “One possibility is that some company directors or CEO attitude committees perceive women as an additional risk and therefore want to serve as presidents before they are considered for the role of the CEO,” she adds.
