Adams tore Mamdani off to skip NYPD funeral until his mayoral campaign launches

Mayor of New York City Eric Adams Last week, his Democratic mayoral rival Zohran Mamdani attended the funeral of New York Police Department official Didal Islam — but attended the service of other fallen officers he was killed in the state assembly — and never publicly acknowledged their deaths.

Former New York Police Captain Adams suggested that Mamdani’s presence at Islamic funerals was politically motivated and inconsistent with his previous stance on policing – which included calling for donations to agencies and slamming them as racist. Mamdani has since returned to these statements.

“We lost officers before running for mayor. Where is he? Does he think those officers should be raised when the Islamic instructors are raised during the election? We need to ask, where is he?” Adams told reporters at the town hall on Monday New York Post.

“When you’re not running for mayor, you should lift the officers. When he’s a councillor, he might lift them up. He could have done that while he was in Albany for years.”

Mamdani, socialist Adams said he has served in the New York State Legislature since January and has not attended the NYPD’s six best funerals.

“Not once (Mamdani) said anything to the policeman who was shot or killed,” Adams said. “We couldn’t find a tweet he sent, nor a comment he made when this happened.”

Mamdani shortened his recent trip to Uganda and returned early for Islamic funeral. According to reports, he first went straight to his family’s home and lived with them for two hours.

But Uganda-born lawmakers have been voice critics for the New York Police Department in the past.

On June 8, 2020, in the Post, Mamdani wrote: “No, we want to allocate funds for the police.” He wrote that “queer liberation means allocating funds for the police.”

“We don’t need to investigate to know that the NYPD is a racist, anti-name and a major threat to public safety. What we need is #defundthenypd. But you deal with (the mayor of New York City) and use budgeting skills to keep as many police officers as possible.

In December of the same year, he also called for “demolition”.

He wrote: “All this pain. It’s all money. In the final budget, the city council tried to cut the NYPD’s overtime budget in half. They just refused. There was no negotiation with this evil and corrupt agency.

“I will not allocate funds to the police. I will work with the police because I believe that police play a key role in public service, public safety,” he said.

On his campaign website, he called for the establishment of a Ministry of Public Safety.

The state of the website state said: “Police have to play a key role. But for the time being, we rely on them to deal with the failure of our social safety net, which prevents them from doing practical work. With this new urban agency and government-wide approach, community safety will never be prioritized in New York City.”
