Sky High Farm debuted as the first biennial exhibition ever, entering a new era. Planning by artists and founders Then Colum,,,,, Trees never end, houses never end Marking a creative milestone for the artist-created nonprofit in Food Justice, the new 560-acre house in Germantown, New York sounds in the next chapter.
The exhibition was staged in an apple refrigerated warehouse along the Hudson River, attracting a lineup of 50 artists from around the world, including Anne Imhof,,,,, South Godin,,,,, Lauren HalseyRirkrit Tiravanija and Alvaro Barrington. Their work is bound by themes of ecology, industry, and memory, taking clues from the region’s stratified history and its connection to New York City.
Featured works can be seen mounted on walls and hung from the ceiling, attracting attention to the original, unchanged aesthetic of the space, while other works act as channels of experience: Imhof’s maze of industrial water containers creates private corridors to showcase other artists’ works while displaying other artists’ works at the same time. Rudolf Stingel Contributed to his largest mirror installation ever, as an immersive base for the artwork above.
The Biennale pays tribute to the late Joey Piecuch, one of the original team members of the farm, whose guerrilla style artistry and commitment to landing management shapes the sky many know and love today. The title of the exhibition nods to one of the works discovered by Piecuch – a poetic phrase and symbol of hope and resistance.
In addition to the exhibition, the farm has also piloted an artist-led fundraising model that replaces traditional auctions with a consistent contribution with flexible value. All proceeds go to the farm’s mission: to produce nutritious food, support climate education, and promote food justice nationwide.
“The problems we are going to solve – insecurity, inequality resource allocation, climate change – require extensive engagement to work to solve,” Co-executive Directors Josh Bardfield and Sarah Workneh said in a recent statement. “We are so moved that there are so many artists, curators, consultants and many other artists in the art world who see the urgency of the work we do and take these generous commitments as a way to join us.”
