At WWDC, Apple introduces iOS 26 and macOS 26 in major operating system rebrand

Apple has announced a great change to how it appoints its operating systems at WWDC 2025 on Monday.

Instead of using system names like iOS 19 and MacOS 19, the company will now use the year as part of the name. This means that all its operating systems will be called iOS 26, iPads 26, MacOS 26, TVOS 26, Watchas 26 and Visionos 26.

This new nomination system aims to make things clearer and more consistent through all platforms. This change will not only simplify the appointment process, but also matches what rivals Samsung and Microsoft already do, making it easier for people to understand and identify the latest updates.

These name changes are part of several ads made at WWDC, including a complete design review that looks like the company calls “liquid glass”, with a transparent interface. This has been the most noticeable change so far, marking the most significant redesign since iOS 7.
