Bookshop.org challenges Amazon with new e-book platform


Indie Bookstore Backer Bookstore.org launched an An e-book platform On Tuesday, facilitating readers to buy e-books without completing Jeff Bezos’s pockets. For years, Amazon’s choking and staggered in the publishing industry was so strong that authors and booksellers have charged the company of operation of a monopoly.

Amazon rules in the sale of e-books for its Kindle, which is one of the leading web readers in the market. Conscious consumers can turn to companies like Kobo For their hardware, but in spite of this, there are no options to buy e-books directly from publishers and independent bookstores, which means readers usually recur to Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or other big box traders.

Bookshop.org and book.fm have appeared as alternatives to Amazon, sharing a cut of sales with independent bookstores around America. But for e-books readers, it was difficult to buy new titles without going through Amazon’s ecosystem. The expansion of Bookshop.org in e-books gives consumers a very expected option to buy these digital books at the same time supporting small businesses.

“When we launched Bookshop.org, the vision was to support local bookstores in their fight against Amazon and other online merchants,” Andy Hunter, founder and general manager of Bookshop.org, said in an announcement of the new skills of the service. “This launch represents our commitment to keep bookstores.”

As it stands, the Bookshop.org e-books are only available in the browser, or in the Bookshop.org programs, available for Android and iOS.

To maximize its impact on the market, however, Bookshop.org will need to offer ways to download their E-books to web readers like Kindle.

“Bookstore selling e-books is not a cure. Amazon monopolized the E-book space for too long to be, ” wrote Book -critic Maris Kreizman about Bluesky. “But it’s an important first step and is worthy of celebrating.”
