Lyon told Canadian Jewish News Last week, she said, “work was a job that was physically and emotionally ripped apart. I mean, I face a lot of hatred myself… a lot of annoying words, act in some cases.”

“I would say that during this period, in the last two years, I’ve been really surprised and often feel frustrated and desperate about this fact. Make people speak outto be clear, believe firmly in what we see on Canadian soil. ” she added.
Irwin Cotler, former Canadian Attorney General and Lyons, a former president of the special envoy of anti-Semitism, told Fox News Digital that the “explosion” among the Jews was not widely condemned, but rather “silence, denial, ridicule, acquiesce, support, support and defense.”
“The government not only wants a virtue signal or perform well, but it needs to take action,” Kotler said. “This is something Deborah has to fight against. She is a very loyal civil servant and I’m sure it’s hard for her to see the government not act as quickly, effectively, effectively or decisive as it was asked.”
Although Jews are less than one percent of Canada’s population, in 2024, 18.8% of all reported hate crimes are Motivated by anti-Semitism.
Of the 1,342 religiously motivated hate crimes reported last year, 920 years (or 68.5%) were designed to the Jewish community.

“We have seen an increase in anti-Semitism by 124% since the Special Envoy Lyon took office,” Richard Robertson, director of research and advocacy at B’nai Brith Canada, told Fox News Digital.
“For the community, this situation is becoming increasingly untenable. Despite some positive steps the federal government has taken, there hasn’t been enough efforts to stop the trend, which puts people like envoys in a very difficult position,” he continued. “So, it’s understandable that she’s tired and frustrated by the current hatred state in Canada.”

Both Cotler and Robertson acknowledged key achievements during Lyons’ tenure, including publishing a book about IHRA’s Definition of Anti-Semitismproduced by the envoy’s office. According to Kotler, the resource is now used internationally by the government to train police, prosecutors, law enforcement officers and civil servants.
Kotler said Lyon was also an important voice in the international coalition of envoys to fight anti-Semitism, giving Canada a certain influence in global resonance. He also highlighted her successful establishment of the envoy’s office and a strong staff and dedicated budget, an institutional foundation that did not exist before.

Lyon also helped organize the national forum on anti-Semitism and anti-Semitism held in March 2024, co-chaired by the Canadian Attorney General and the Attorney General. The forum brings together leaders of governments at all levels to deal with the public safety threat posed by Jewish hatred.
“We need a whole approach to government,” Robertson said. “That’s why, right after that Mark Carney’s electionWe wrote to the Prime Minister and outlined the main government departments that could demand immediate impact on the anti-Semitism crisis. This is not something that the envoy can solve alone, but requires coordination of government-wide efforts. ”

Noah Shack, CEO of the Center for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), told Fox News Digital that they quickly collapse when law enforcement agencies or public agencies face anti-Semitic protests, harassment or intimidation directly.
“I think it’s very illuminating — when our public institutions take action to back off, it disappears,” he said. “We do need government, law enforcement and the broader society to recognize that we all now have a responsibility to oppose the hatred currently against the Jewish community, while also targeting our core values as Canadians. If we don’t stand up, it will transcend our society and bring a very dark future for all Canadians.”
The shed outlines what he believes are three emergency operations Canada This problem can be solved meaningfully. First, he stressed the need to follow the commitment to establishing safe areas around places of worship, community centers, day care centers, schools and other places where Jewish communities gather.
Second, he called for increased support for Jewish community security programs to protect these facilities from the threat of violence they face.

“We’ve shot the school and the synagogue is on fire. It’s a very worrying situation and we need to ensure government funding and integrate our community safety programs to improve safety exponentially,” he said.
Third, Shack stresses the need to address the growing number of radicalization seen on the streets and within public institutions.
“Canada’s anti-terrorism law should be a criminal offence with countries like the UK’s terrorist and terrorist organizations.”

Shack also warns against trying to redirect anti-Zionism with Anti-Semitismnoting that the premise itself is flawed, and stressing that it is equally annoying to blame Jews on differences with Israel’s government policies.
“I do not represent the Israeli government; I represent myself as a Jew who lives in Canada. Like my friends, family and colleagues who live in the United States, we deserve the same respect and rights as any other Canadian or American citizen,” he said.
