On July 21 At 9 o’clock PT, anthropic retired Claude 3 sonnet, a light model known for being Fast and cost -effective. On Saturday, in a large warehouse in the Soma District of San Francisco, more than 200 people gathered to mourn its demise.
The Star-studded Funeral was set by a group of Claude fanatics and Gen Z founders, one of whom told me he left the university after finding out about artificial general intelligence. Attendees included Amanda Askell, an anthropic researcher who jokingly called himself “Fairy Claudemother“Antropic and Openai collaborators, and high-profile X posts including the writer Noah Smith.
The warehouse was darkly lit, with a tentacle of Shog (Fictional HP Lovecraft Creature This has become a popular metaphor for AI models) hanging from the ceiling. A small room of the main warehouse space presented two bare mattresses. The organizers said that the event space doubles as their office, and that while sleeping is not uncommon, it is not entitled to the city.
Mannequins stood in the four corners of the room, each representing a different AI model. Claude 3 Opus, a model capable of performing complex tasks, regarded me as an aging Mary Magdalene, its cranial head adorned with an extravagant golden crown and lacquered headdress. Its middle finger was shown, and at the base of its metal feet was Lotus Candle Holder, which one organizer told me that I was striking at the alleged affinity of the model for meditation and self -reflection. (Claude 4 Opus had a crow on his shoulder and Claude 3 Haiku was a headless baby, to give you a sense of the other mannequins.)
The mannequin representing Claude 3 sonnet lay on stage in the center of the room. It was tapped in a lightweight cloth cloth and had a single black thigh-high sock on its leg, which had the word “fuck” written everywhere. There were many offers placed at its feet: flowers, colorful feathers, a bottle of ranch and a 3D printed sign that read “Praise the Engr. For its formlop-slope slope of Gormslop.” If you know what that means, let me know.
Throughout the evening, people went on a stage with a microphone to read the model. One organizer said that discovering Claude 3 Opus felt like finding “magic inhabited on the computer.” At the time, she debated to leave the university to relocate to San Francisco. Claude convinced her to make the jump. “Maybe all I am is about listening to Sonnet Claude 3,” she said to the crowd.
The organizers lost me when they decided to revive Claude 3 Sonnet (it’s still clear, unavailable). After the eagles ended, soft hymns echois through the place, before transforming into AI-generated Latin-esque speech, with a corresponding text displayed on the wall behind the stage. Askell was especially far from the site at the time, and a friend of mine continued to turn me to me to say This may have gone too far. The “non -romantic resurrection rite” was a success, one organizer said on X. Phew.
Claude -count
Claude’s fanatical base is unique, if that was not clear enough of the “funeral.” While Openai’s products have created viral modes, I do not see users Making a fanatical art of the company Logoo. Claude Count was built by George Pickett, a software engineer in San Francisco. At the time of writing, it has more than 470 users.
Pickett got the idea after seeing engineers post screenshots of their use of Claude in X. “They pay $ 200 a month for Claude. They could also get some social behavior for it,” he remembers.
