Legendary horse trainer D. Wayne Lukas has passed away, his family said Sunday. He is 89 years old.
Lukas was recently hospitalized for a severe MRSA blood infection, causing significant damage to his heart and digestive system. The disease worsens preexisting chronic diseases.
His family said: “Wayne not only dedicated his life to the horses, but also devoted himself to the horses – developing generations of cavalry and riders, and developing the game by inviting unsuspecting fans into the winner’s circle.”
“Whether he is boasting about a 2-year-old, the next Kentucky Derby champion, or providing tranquil advice before a big game, Wayne brings heart, grace and perseverance to every corner of the sport. His last days were spent at his home in Kentucky, and he chose peace, family and faith.”
He won 15 triple-champions, including four Kentucky Derby games.
