New York City’s leading mayoral candidate, Zohran Mamdanidespite previous calls for funding to police, his campaign and personal life still spend a lot on private security.

But Mamdani’s tone during the campaign was very different, and he said this week that the tweets “don’t match my position as a candidate.”
“I did not donate to the police,” he told reporters at a press conference after the shooting.
However, he did not reject the recent social media posts starting in December 2024, and he promised to dissolve the New York Police Department’s Strategic Response Team (SRG), a group that is tasked with responding to mass shootings and other emergencies.

“As mayor, I will disband the SRG, which has cost taxpayers millions of dollars in litigation settlements and cruel countless New Yorkers to exercise their First Amendment rights,” he wrote.
