Democrats flee Texas to stop Trump-backed Republican redistribution map

Democratic lawmakers have fled Texas to try to stop voting on the new Congressional map, which will greatly benefit Republicans.

The proposed re-division – a Texas majority Republican unveiled last week with Donald Trump’s support – will create five new Republican-oriented seats in the U.S. House. Republicans currently have only a slim majority in the House of Representatives.

To vote, two-thirds of the 150-member state legislature must be attended. Fifty-one Democratic lawmakers fled Texas, most of whom fled to Illinois, denying the quorum needed by Republicans.

They said they planned to stay for two weeks until the special legislative session ended.

The conference was convened by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, himself a Republican. He threatened to try to remove any congressman from the office who failed to return to Texas to vote.

The meeting in the Texas legislature was to provide disaster relief after last month’s active ingredients in the state’s deadly floods and active ingredients in marijuana and approved the planned election redistribution.

Each of the 51 absent members could face a $500 (£380) fine per day, with Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who Republicans threatened to arrest them.

Paxton wrote on X that the state should “use every tool we can use to find those who think they are beyond the law.”

He added: “Democrats in the Texas House try to escape like a co-husband, and should be arrested and brought back to the Capitol immediately.”

In a statement, Texas Democrats defended the move.

“We are not responsible for our responsibility,” said state lawmaker and chairman of the State Representative and Democratic caucus Gene Wu.

“We are refusing to listen to the manipulation system we represent.”

State Democrats gained support from the National Party. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said the group showed “courage, faith and character.”

Although Democrats threaten to sell and sell strategies nationwide, their choices may be limited.

In the states where they handle the rezoning process, such as Illinois, New Mexico and Nevada, Democrats have moved around as eagerly as Republicans.

Texas’ redistricting could help put slim Republicans in the House of Representatives ahead of next year’s national midterm elections.

Trump’s party currently has 219 out of 435 seats in the House, while Democrats have 212 seats.

The new map will include a re-division of the Rio Grande Valley and combine the state capital of Austin, currently held by Democrats.

In northern Texas, the map will expand the area held by Democratic Congressman Julie Johnson to include a rural Republican stronghold.

It will also re-draw four Houston-area seats, including those held by Democratic Congressman Al Green.

Texas lawmaker Todd Hunter, a Republican, sponsored measures to repaint maps, calling it “a good plan for Texas.”

This is the third time in the past few years that the Democrats fled Texas to deny the Republican quorum.

The party’s lawmakers set out for Washington, D.C. in 2021, and ultimately failed to try to prevent the passage of new election rules.

Texas Democrats also traveled to Oklahoma in 2003 to stop redistricting Republicans eventually received approval.

When the voting map is remarked to explain population changes, states usually re-divided every 10 years.
