this Ministry of Justice (The Justice Department) announced on Monday a mass charge against more than 300 defendants, accusing them of misleading patients for paying and sometimes even receiving medical services they do not need.
Matthew Galeotti, head of the Justice Department’s criminal department, said the defendants also tried to deceive Medicare and other taxpayer-funded and private health insurance plans, which were about $14.6 billion.
Galterti said at a press conference that the news marked “the biggest health care fraud in the history of the Justice Department.”

One of the defendants, a nurse practitioner, applied the graft to patients even if they were “medically unreasonable and unnecessary”, the indictment said. Nurses are allegedly applying it to terminally ill patients in hospice care, including some who have been dead a few days away.

“This behavior sounds like a ruthless act,” Galleti said. “The lives of patients and their families trust these providers. Instead of receiving care, they become victims of elaborate criminal plans.”

“We need your help, Americans,” Oz said. “Why? More than half of the whistleblowers we get are for health care fraud, and more than half of the frauds targeting our government are for health care.”
