The crown WBA super lightweight world champion Gary Antuanne Russell has no opponents arranged, but he has been in the gym, preparing for the fight as he has placed the 140-pound belt holder on the radar.
Three months ago, Russell won the WBA World Championship during his reign, and by far the biggest win of his career. Now, the focus of the new world champion is to win more gold as the potential unification rounds sparked his interest.
Maryland native Gary Antuanne Russell made his professional boxing match in May 2017, winning the first round of TKO defeats Josh Ross. Russell will continue to beat his next 16 opponents.
He was planned to face the huge opportunity of Alberto Puello in June 2024 to compete in the vacant WBC WBC interim super lightweight championship. Russell’s battle with Puello was an entertaining back and forth battle, but in the end, Puello won by split decisions.
Nine months later, Russell won another chance to win when he faced WBA world champion Jose Valenzuela. In the first round of the round, Russell pushed forward and consistently extended a sharp jab, very aggressive.
In the early stages of the fight, Russell drowned Jose Venezuela with fists and accuracy. Russell was able to maintain a high batch pace throughout the game as he achieved a unanimous decision victory.
With a win, Gary Antuanne Russell (18-1, 17 KO) became the new WBA super lightweight world champion. Now, Russell, 29, is one of four belt holders in the 140-pound division.
Gary Antuanne Russell is known as “the boo of the weight class.” Russell hopes to play against WBO champion Teofimo Lopez, or against WBC champion Alberto Puello, but the boxer currently on his radar is the IBF champion.
Richardson Hitchins performed well on the evening of June 14 as he stopped George Kambosos Jr in the eighth round. After a statement inside the ring, Hitchens expressed interest in fighting Teofimo Lopez or Devin Haney.
Gary Antuanne Russell couldn’t help but notice that his name was not mentioned. Russell continued to post a post on social media to address his thoughts on the missed.
“How a man loses 4 times in amateurs, we both have belts in the same department, but you don’t even want to hit me. Boxing is getting softer and softer for the truth. As long as it makes sense, money or legacy, I’ll fight anyone.”
