Local authorities say twelve people were injured in a busy bar in a French city.
The incident occurred shortly after 20:00 local time on Wednesday evening (19:00 GMT), putting the two people in critical condition.
The motive for the attack is unclear, but investigators said it “may be related to the settlement of the scores.”
Prosecutor Francois Touret-De-Courcey said the witness’s accounts indicate that the yet uncertain suspect may also be carrying the Kalashnikov assault rifle.
“There’s nothing that makes us think it’s related to terrorism,” he said in a speech to reporters on the scene, describing the incident as “extremely violent acts.”
He added that investigators are looking at possible links to drug trafficking.
Authorities said many were at the venue near the city’s Olympic Village when the suspect entered briefly.
French Zile Figaro reported that about 80 firefighters and police were deployed to the scene and the area was blocked Thursday morning.
Deputy Mayor Chloe Pantel told AFP the venue is “a place where locals and people from nearby neighborhoods gather, especially where football matches are watched.”
She added that police presence in the area will last for some time.
Mayor Eric Piolle posted on X, condemning what he called “extraordinary violence” and then thanking the rescue and security forces for their rapid intervention.”
