University of Houston professor David McNally proposes to rename his school to “George Floyd University, and canceled tuition fees and grades at the 2025 Socialist Conference on Saturday.

“We will open the university in this way,” McNally said. “And I can tell you with confidence that in Houston’s third district, that means we’ll be renamed George Floyd University.”
He noted that Floyd grew up in the Third Ward and attended a school near campus before moving to Minneapolis.

McNally also tells about his experience of watching George Floyd Black Life protests In June 2020, he saw police officers flooded by protesters.
“Suddenly, when we control the streets, you’ll get a glimpse of what it means, because the police retreated. Their numbers totally exceeded,” McNally recalls. “When the balance of social forces, even in a small situation, and how the vision of possibility changes, you start to feel what happens. During that time, that part of downtown Houston was no longer in their hands. It was in our hands. It was the hands of the rebellion.”
After Floyd’s death, the University of Houston held several courses and programs around racial oppression. These include 2022 Race and Capitalism Projectthis is directed by McNally.
McNally suggested that the “social insurgency” he saw from anti-Israel campus protests could be the next moment of insurgency and that they would need to make changes if it could be “significantly expanded.”
His other advice was to abolish campus police and replace them with a “democratic and elected security committee”, restore the LGBTQ+ center, declaring the school a “sanctuary campus” from ice officials and “cancelling tuition and grades.”

In a statement Fox News NumbersA spokesman for the school said McNally’s comments did not “represent the University of Houston’s perspective.” However, they added that despite First Amendment rights, the “context, environment or other circumstances” of the comments could “affect those rights”.
