If a thief sometimes steals an iPhone From your bag or even catch it out of your grip, panic starts immediately. You may also have much more to worry more than just the cost of replacing the phone. What if they saw me enter the Easter and now have Easy access To all my messages, photos and sensitive information? Although it is certainly nasty to capture your wisdom phone, ignition the protection of Apple’s stolen device can immediately cut the access of thieves to your wisdom phone data. This feature is not automatically enabled and should be activated before the crime occurs.
First released as part of iOS 17.3, a stolen device protection essentially adds an additional layer of security to your smartphone when the device is somewhere that you do not regularly visit. Here is a quick guide to what the software does and what steps are needed to turn it on.
To dive deeper into Apple’s anti-steal software, check out a WIRED safety reporter Matt Burgess’s article about the feature of last year. If you have an Android phone, read my usage guide Detection of theft of Android Features.
The feature is specifically designed for situations where a criminal not only takes your iPhone but also knows your Easter and can unlock the device. When they physically take away your phone from you and bring it to a place you don’t often visit, then the Security measures on stolen device begins to kick.
The main thing the function triggers is that it begins to require your Face ID biometry To access any sensitive features on the phone, such as using your key passwords, view your stored payment information in Safari and turn off lost mode. Even if the thieves know your Easter, it will no longer work as a backup option; Face ID becomes required for full access. This also prevents thieves to easily delete all your phone data so they can sell it, as this procedure also requires Faceid.
In addition to enforcing biometric authentication, a stolen device protection adds a security delay period for changes to security functions on the phone. If the thief wants to turn off your Apple ID or turn off Find my iPhoneFor example, they can’t just hold the phone in front of your face for a few seconds as they flee from the location of the crime. With the automatic security delay of the feature, you need to wait an hour to make major security changes to the device, and you need to confirm your biometrics initially and at the end of this process.
Before you can turn on stolen protection, you must first set a few other basic features on your smartphone. You probably already have FACE ID and Easter enabled on your Apple device – both are needed for the feature to work.
Next, you will need to check if two -factor authentication is Enabled for your Apple IDWhat is a good idea even if you do not use a stolen device protection. Check if you already use this by going to Settingstapping on your name at the top, and then choosing the Log in and security tab. You should see if 2FA for your Apple ID is turned on or off in the middle of this screen.
The last software you need to activate on the iPhone is significant places. This controls places you regularly visit, so your phone can detect whether it is in a known or unknown location. According to AppleThe data is finally-to-end encrypted and are not read by the company. Significant places are somewhat buried in the menus – find it opening Settingsso Privacy and securityand Local services. After that, scroll all the way down until you see the System services tab. Choose Significant placesAnd you will probably be asked to unlock it with Face ID. On the next page, move the bulk to the right to finish enable the function.
HUF! Okay, now you are ready to start using a stolen device protection. And, fortunately for you, after all this work, the last step is a breeze. Open Settings one more time, then Face ID & pass codeand fill your pascoda. Scroll about halfway down the page, select the Stolen device protection tab, and move that basket on the right.
