What attracted the specific plans you took with baby2baby, especially when it comes to donations?
This Amazon series is summer and obviously I’m so connected and now keep in touch with everything about Baby because I have a 1 year old so that’s all my brains thinking. But my connection with baby2baby has been around for a long time. I’m very close to the founder and I’ve always been passionate about helping mothers and children in my community. To me, it is always very important.
Once I had a daughter and went through my own postpartum experience, I started to see children and mothers that were unique and more sensitive. So, I know that giving back to Baby2baby was, and is still very important to me. Yes, it’s definitely effortless when it’s given them a chance to donate. They do a lot for mothers and kids around the world and any help I can provide is very important to me and the brand.
You have also created a registry. It feels like every chic person’s dream, especially for moms, there is such a shopping list. How did you decide to lay off employees? Can you tell me more about the products you include?
Yes, so when I was pregnant I really wanted to find a one-stop shop for what I really needed, the actual necessities. I ended up making my own little PDF registry. Then, after I gave birth, I was like, do you know what I really want? Put it all where other moms can go and have the same one-stop shop.
To me, it’s really about the necessities – the things I picked up along the way were very helpful. I just put everything together so that other moms can see what is really useful.
You created your own collection using Amazon, how do you put your personal style into the boundaries?
So for me, when I was shopping for Eloise before I was born, I was just buying something I thought was really cute. But when these items actually arrived I ended up donating about half of the stuff, and that’s because I’m not the fabric I approved, otherwise there was almost nothing that wouldn’t work on sensitive skin. For designers, these details may not be the most important. It’s more about aesthetics.
So it’s very important for me to pay attention to the fabric and materials while still bringing a cute style to the kids. This is huge for me. Also, having cute essentials is important. Many times, when you have this little baby growing so fast, it can last for two weeks, maybe a month.
So it’s key to have something affordable to keep buying. For me, I keep reordering basic tights kits. They won’t be outdated, they’re so cute that I can reduce myself – they’ll carry it with me. These are real necessities that I always add in Eloise’s closet. But yes, this fabric is so important – although still lovely, fun, playful, and in this case it’s summer.
What was your way of designing this series, and will your dressing affect it?
I think there is more room for entertainment when designing kids’ clothes, having fun and showing very bold expressions. As an adult, it is obviously much harder—you can’t walk around with a smiling face completely on your clothes.
Designing kids’ clothes unlocks the other side of my creative brain, and I’m really able to draw on this inner, fun, entertaining aesthetic while still being true to chic shapes, funny shoulders and similar details. This definitely opened up a whole new creative aspect for me.
I saw last year you called it “Mom Summer” instead of “Boy Summer”. What is this summer like for you? Is it the same vibe or something different? Where do you feel the way you are shaping this summer?
Do you know? I told all my girlfriends that it was my hot summer. But the truth is, I think I always have a mom summer. Like, I’m just a mom-we can have a hot mom summer.
Do you have any advice for new moms? Or is the specific suggestions you received really connected to you?
I don’t think the biggest advice I’ve received is hard for myself. All difficult times, especially after childbirth – will pass. As a mom, you are doing your best. I really think it helps me work hard. It’s been very helpful in mind.
