According to Fox News, Senate Majority Leader John Thune, Sen. Bernie Moreno and Sen. Mike Rounds attended the Indian Treaty Room to await the first ceremony.
Taylor Van Kirk, a spokesman for the vice president, told Fox News that the swearing-in was “due to a scheduling conflict.”
“We are excited that she will bring much-needed change to DHS and secure jobs at the border,” Kirk said.
earlier in the day Senate The vote, 59-34, confirmed Noem as Homeland Security secretary, making her the fourth Trump nominee to win approval from the Chamber of Commerce.
She said one of Noem’s top priorities is to secure the southern border and fix the “broken immigration system.”
“The Trump Administration will empower our brave men and women to work in law enforcement and remove criminal aliens and illegal gangs from our country,” Noem wrote in a statement. “We will fully equip our Intelligence and law enforcement to detect and prevent terrorist threats and will provide rapid assistance and disaster relief to Americans in crisis.”
The Trump administration has taken steps to secure the border, including deploying the military, restarting wall construction and ending the previous administration’s parole program.
Before being sworn in, the president called out Noem at a rally in Las Vegas, describing her as “strong.”
“I am grateful to President Trump and the United States Senate for the trust they have placed in me,” she wrote. “Together, we will ensure that America once again remains a beacon of freedom, safety, and security for generations to come.”
Prior to her new role, Noem served as South Dakota’s first female governor. She promised in 2021 that she would not take any more migrants away from the Biden administration and instead deploy the National Guard to the Texas border.
Noem was a rancher, farmer, and small business owner who served in the South Dakota Legislature and then was elected as South Dakota’s sole member of the U.S. House of Representatives.
