Top five division world champion Sugar Ray Leonard showed off his fast pace this week in a glove workout. In a video clip, the 69-year-old Sugar Ray works on the balcony of California’s affluent Pacific Palisades in his beautiful large mansion.
Leonard’s Eternal Hand Speed
1976 Olympic gold medalist Leonard (36-3-1, 25 KO) doesn’t seem to be very fast since he retired from an eye injury in 1982. Indeed, even for fighters in their 20s, the speed with sugar rays in this week’s video clip is impressive. It is rare to see Leonard’s era fighters still have hand speed and look like his way of moving.
Leonard is seen as the gold standard that he desires to be at the second level. There is no combination of speed, power and boxing ability that sugar rays possess. While some have been around since retirement, fighters like Floyd Mayweather Jr., Terence Crawford and Jaron “Boots” Ennis lack the overall talent of Leonard.

If Sugar Ray had fought in this era, it was how much money he would make and what his achievements were illusory. It would be fun to see what he could have done to fight against Canelo Alvarez, Gennadiy Golovkin, Crawford, Boots Ennis and Dmitry Bivol.
Boxing is still shown on major network TV stations such as ABC, CBS and NBC when Leonard fights. At the end of Sugar Ray’s career, his main battle was shown on the Prime Minister’s cable platforms HBO and Showtime. HBO PPV shows Leonard’s 1989 match against Tommy Hearns.
