The man told the doctors that he had begun to take a sodium bromur intentionally three months earlier. He read about the negative health effects of having too much table salt (sodium chloride) in your diet. However, when he looked at the literature, he only gave advice on how to reduce sodium consumption.
“Inspired by his history of studying nutrition in college,” the doctors wrote, the man instead decided to try to remove chloride from his diet. He consulted Chatgpt for help and apparently said chloride could be safely exchanged with bromide. With the Clear of the AI, he began consumption of sodium bromide purchased online.
Considering the timeline of the case, the man probably used Chatgpt 3.5 or 4.0. The doctors did not have access to the man’s chat logs, so we will never know exactly how his fatal consultation deployed. It is possible, even likely that the man’s AI was related to examples of bromide replacement, which had nothing in common with diet, as for cleaning. The chatgpt of the doctors especially stated in their response that the context of this replacement was important, they wrote. But the AI also never gave a warning about the dangers of consumption of bromide, nor did they ask why the person interested this question first.
As for the man himself, he slowly recovered from his courage. He was later taken away from antipsychotic medication and relieved from the hospital three weeks after admission. And at a two-week follow-up, he remained in a stable state.
The doctors wrote that while tools such as ChatGPT can “provide a bridge between scientists and the non -academic population, AI also has the risk for promulgating decadentialized information.” With a little admirable stay, they added that a human medical expert would probably not recommend switching to brommer to someone worried about their table -sal consumption.
