Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg told investors that the newly formed Meta Superintelligence Labs It is focused on building AI models that can self-enhance-meaning that they can learn from themselves without so much human input. The remarks came during a second-quarter win-call on Wednesday.
“At some level, [it’s] Not only will people learn from people, because you want to build something fundamentally smarter than people, “Zuckerberg said.” So … you will develop a way to improve itself. This is a very fundamental thing that will have broad implications on how we build products and how we manage the company. ”
It is one of a handful of comments that the Director General has over the past 12 hours that a gesture of how the new Meta research lab is planning to compete with rivals like Openai, Google Deepmind and Antropic.
Early this -morning, Zuckerberg Posted letter online and shared a video to Instagram coils, in which he said that Meta’s superintelligent efforts would focus on building “personal superintelligence”, which would give people tools for their own empowerment and to improve the world. “This differs from others in the industry, who believe that superintelligence must be directed centrally to automation of all valuable work, and then humanity will live on a dollar of its output,” he said.
Another key piece of Meta’s AI strategy is SmartGlasses, which Zuckerberg said he believes that “will essentially be the ideal form factor for AI.” Ever since they debuted in 2023, Meta has sold two million pairs of smart sunglasses made in partnership with Ray-Ban. Last September, the company also showed a futuristic prototype of glasses of increased reality. (The prototype, called Orion, is not expected to send to consumers, but Meta said it plans to build new devices over the next few years based on Orion Research.)
Currently, Meta seems to make some distinction between AI, which operates the monetization of its core products, such as Instagram and WhatsApp, and Superintelligent AI, which could one day help the future of powerful humanity.
Zuckerberg’s remarks about superintelligence came on the heels of a better than expected earnings account. The company, which stayed behind its competitors in the AI race, spends billions of dollars to build a small but powerful superintelligent lab that will focus on building Frontier AI models.
Since publicly announcing the lab last month, Meta has been aggressive recruiting, carrying key Silicon Valley -operations such as Alexandr Wang, Nat Friedman and Daniel Gross, and offering AI compensation packages up to nine digits to attract them to the lab. Wang was part of a “acquisition employment” agreed with a scale AI, AI-data tagging starting, which he co-founded. Former Openai researcher Shengjia Zhao was named the head of Meta’s new research lab.
Meta revised his expectations for his capital spending for the year, increasing its forecast to $ 69 billion. Exchange compensation is one of the biggest drivers of this, Meta’s chief financial officer, Susan Li, said, as well as AI infrastructure. Despite the amount the company spends to build its AI products, it also envisages a better than expected view for the third quarter, forecasting between $ 47.5 billion and $ 50.5 billion income.
