Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson Monday expressed concerns that potential federal forces deployed to his city as part of the immigration crackdown by former President Donald Trump, warning that the move could be unconstitutional and legally challenged.
Johnson speaks at a Town Hall press conference in response to a report on federal plans to upgrade immigration enforcement Sanctuary cities like Chicagocalling this idea a threat to civil liberties and local governance.
“This is just another example of his animation for the working people,” Johnson said. “I think it’s important for the president to respect the constitution. If you ask me if this president will work with city leaders, it’s obvious that he’s not interested in that.”

Johnson’s remarks are in response to Trump administration officials’ response Rolling stonessaid: “Chicago is next if they go too far,” referring to recent protests and the city’s asylum policy.
“Their second time, the president is ready to prove that no one is beyond the law,” the official added.
Comments follow Chicago’s anti-ice and anti-Trump protests National Demonstrationreportedly prompted federal officials to closely monitor the situation, especially after the Trump administration deployed National Guard units to Los Angeles.
“We will continue to resist,” Johnson said. “Whether in court, on the street or through public policy, we will stand up for the working people.”
Mary Richardson-Lowry, legal counsel for the city’s company, emphasized the legal restrictions of such deployment. “We believe that deploying a force or the National Guard under the Constitution is a violation of the Constitution,” she said.

Last week, Johnson called on Chicagoans to talk to the ice and what he said Immigration law enforcement “terrorism”.
Since August 2022, Chicago has received more than 51,000 immigrants from the southern border, with many of the buses from Texas under the relocation of Republican Governor Greg Abbott.
The latest tension comes ahead of Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker, who testified last week to defend the state’s sanctuary city policy.
