Meteorites found in the southern sky
Dashcam footage captured a large fireball in the sky in Lexington, South Carolina, which was recently identified as a meteorite fragment, crashed into a Georgia house on June 26, 2025.

A geology professor said that the meteorite fragments that burst on the roof of a Georgia house last June have been identified as billions of years old and predated the Earth.
Scott Harris, a geologist at the University of Georgia Asteroid The belt between Mars and Jupiter fell to Earth near Atlanta on June 26.
He said he was immediately informed of the incident and then went to check what happened, looking for the fragmented entry point as an attic.
“They knew about the hole in the roof, but they didn’t know it went through the air duct, through one side of the air duct, out the other side of the air duct through a couple of feet of insulation, then through the ceiling, then they had about a 10-foot-high ceiling, kind of a slanted frame ceiling, and then it went the distance from there to the floor and left about a centermeter-and-a-half little crater in the floor.”

He said the meteorite left a hole in the floor, “about the size of a big cherry tomato.”
“So that’s enough to impress part of it, it’s crushed like someone hit it with a sledgehammer,” he explained.
Harris said ancient debris briefly broke the sound barrier when it entered Earth’s atmosphere.
“These objects date back to the original material formed 4.56 billion years ago,” Harris explained. “So, a few days ago,” he said. Make a planet I, at least the inner planet of the rock. And, you know, these were the basic building blocks of our rocky planets at the time, so that’s one of the reasons scientists were interested in studying them, because it showed us some of the processes that were active in the early stages of the solar system. ”

It is believed that the earth has a history of 4.54 billion years.

Harris explains that while such a small piece of debris does not pose a threat to anyone, scientists want to study the dynamics of meteorites falling into the Earth because “the ultimate goal is to tell you what the risk assessment of absolute doom is.”
“No one does anything with small objects like this, but it’s important to understand where these materials are in the solar system and to understand even the dynamics of small pieces of them are ultimately important to us to understand what’s bigger and what’s going on in the future,” he said.

Scientists studying meteorite dynamics can try “design methods to avoid conflict with them, most notably, a few years ago, Dart Mission proved such a technology where we can actually make so-called dynamical bad behaviors go and basically move asteroids,” Harris explains.
“If you move the asteroid to us and you move it early enough, you can avoid us avoiding everyone together.”
