A legitimate fear that parents have is that their child, or children, will grow up to be full-fledged psychopaths with a propensity for antisocial behavior, violence, or both. For Abbey Bell by Melinda Page Hamilton in the 2020’s MOM Mothers of Monstersher worst nightmare comes true when her 16-year-old son Jacob’s (Bailey Edwards) behavior becomes so uncontrollable that she decides to set up a complex network of nanny cams in her home to document in his every move. Using the found footage filming method, Tucia Lyman’s Mothers of Monsters centers on the lives of a mother and son through video blogs in an effort to determine whether Jacob’s behavior is the result of nature, nurture, or some combination of these two factors.
While I was very much enjoying sitting Mothers of Monsters, It’s one of those horror thrillers that I’ll probably only watch once because of its heavy subject matter, but can’t recommend more if you’re looking for a found footage entry that will disturb you to the point of wanting to -install cameras on. every room in your house the next time your child engages in questionable behavior.
Abbey Has Every Right To Be Paranoid

Mothers of Monsters is framed through the perspective of Abbey Bell, a middle-aged single mother who has reason to believe her son Jacob is a textbook psychopath. Fearing that his behavior will eventually escalate to the point of committing a school shooting, Abbey is especially frustrated because Jacob – in the midst of his documented outbursts of anger – is doing so well at school, with a tight-knit group of friends, and from the outside it seems. to be your run-of-the-mill angsty teenager by most conventional standards.
Uploading her video blogs to a cloud server as a way to warn other parents living under similar circumstances, Abbey told her viewers that Jacob overwhelmed his therapists, and knows how to act normal in public settings because he has mastered the art of acting like. “Fake Jacob” if he has to keep showing up. Never failing to show receipts for her claims, Abbey regularly visits home movies from Jacob’s childhood where she is accused of killing the family pet, and acting cruel to children who his age.
Meanwhile, Jacob exhibits impulsive and abnormal behavior, such as throwing bricks from a busy overpass to traffic below (for fun) or making Jackass-style home movies with his friends that involve wearing a shock collar for dogs, it seems like he beat his mother for always keeping him at arm’s length.
Nature, Nurture, or Both?

What makes Mothers of Monsters Such a fascinating watch is how Abbey is not necessarily a reliable character despite the fact that she records every single interaction she has with her son against his knowledge. Abbey, whose fears about her son are warranted (albeit a little over-the-top), also has a lot of unresolved mental illness as a result of past traumas involving her older brother. that Jacob behaved the same way when he was a teenager. . Abbey’s camera footage is also quite telling in the sense that her medicine chest is full of prescriptions that she may or may not have taken as instructed, and she also had a drinking habit, which resulted in her death in couch in more than one. occasion.
Furthermore, whenever Abbey’s mother or therapist suggested that she might be overreacting to Jacob’s morbid curiosity about dissecting animals or putting bump stocks on his Airsoft guns, she was completely shut down because she was sure her son was a psychopath, and didn’t want to hear. any input that suggests otherwise.
Abbey has made up her mind, and you can ask yourself if she’s the least bit responsible for Jacob’s worsening behavior.
You Will Be Left Guessing Until The Credits Roll

The family dynamic of Mothers of Monsters a treasure trove of showing a completely dysfunctional family dynamic that will make you wonder who’s really at fault. There are times when you can see that Jacob’s behavior is justified because of how his mother treats him – he just wants to play video games and do bad things with his friends without thinking about the consequences, while the his mother was always confused because she thought he was a mass murderer in the making. His outbursts can be dismissed as hormonal or reactive because he knows his mother thinks he’s a problem child, and it’s up to the viewer to figure out which version of Jacob we’re seeing in screen.
When Mothers of Monsters Moving into the third act, you will find yourself asking more and more questions about Abbey and Jacob’s relationship as things continue to develop. Meanwhile a clearer picture of Jacob emerges through found footageAbbey’s approach to parenting only continued to make the situation more volatile.
