MSNBC panel members urge Obama to speak out after ‘strong’ comment

A MSNBC panel member urged former President Barack Obama to speak out more frequently on Saturday after urging party members to “strengthen” in a recent fundraising campaign.

“I know he’s done being president, and many will say he doesn’t owe us anything else, but I think if we are in a moment of crisis, and you’ve ever led this country, you should still care about this country enough to be out there. I’ve had this crazy thought that if every time Donald Trump did something crazy or said something crazy, Barack Obama should have a press conference or something,” Shaniqua McClendon, the vice president of political strategy at Crooked Media, said during MSNBC’s “The Weekend.”

McClendon agrees with Obama’s recent proposal for Democrats Should be “strong”, But more people are urging the former president to be president.

“He’s a guy who can get attention. So, I think it’s the unfair part, and most Democrats aren’t Barack Obama. They can’t get people’s attention in his way. And, we’re in a media environment, even if you’re fighting, it’s not worth it if no one hears your voice, it’s not worth it. People hear him. I do think it’s fair.”

During a fundraiser in July, Obama suggested that members of the party should stop complaining.

“I think it will require a little less gaze on the belly button, less complaining, and being in the fetal position. It will require Democrats to step up,” Obama said at the fundraiser. Obtained by CNN. “Don’t tell me you’re a Democrat, but you’re a little disappointed now, so you did nothing. No, now is the time to get there to do something.”

MSNBC host Catherine Rampell wondered if Obama would be accused of sucking all the oxygen if Obama was there more.

And if Barack Obama is someone who can reject that, at least get people to pay attention to the fact that it is happening, that’s important. Yes, I don’t think it’s an argument, I hope that’s something we have to worry about.”
