Elon MuskSX said on Tuesday that the Indian government ordered the company to block 2,355 accounts in the country, including Reuters.
X’s Global Government Affairs Account said: “The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology requires immediate action – within one hour – without providing a reason and requires the account to be blocked until further notice.”
The news agency said the main Reuters accounts, as well as those of Reuters, were blocked by Indian users on Saturday. The screenshot shows “Reject @reuters’ account to respond to legal requirements.”
The Indian government’s News Information Bureau told Reuters that no government agency needed to block the account and said it was working with X to resolve the issue. Accounts are restored on Sunday.
The statement on Tuesday is the latest development in the ongoing censorship legal battle between Musk’s social media website and Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Indian government.
X sued Modi’s government in March, accusing India of IT Department Illegal extension of online censorship to make it easier to delete content.
Musk often calls himself an absolutist of free speech and says his takeover of Twitter is partly due to restrictions he believes are unfair A conservative view and sound.
