Israeli media said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will completely reoccupy the Gaza Strip when he encounters his security cabinet.
Local journalists quoted a senior official as saying: “Death has been sent. We will do our best to conquer the Gaza Strip and defeat Hamas.”
The official, who was not named, responded to reports from the Army chief and other military leaders against the plan: “If that doesn’t work for the chief of staff, he should resign.”
Hostage families fear that such a plan could harm their loved ones, 20 of 50 of whom are believed to be alive in Gaza, while polls show that three-quarters of Israelis favor a ceasefire agreement to return them.
Many close Israeli allies will also condemn such moves as they push for war and actions to mitigate the humanitarian crisis.
Within Israel, hundreds of retired Israeli security officials, including former heads of intelligence agencies, Joint letter from U.S. President Donald Trumpcalling on him to put pressure on Netanyahu to end the war.
One of the signatories is Ami Ayalon, former head of the animal intelligence agency, told the BBC that further military operations would be futile.
“From a military perspective,[Hamas]was completely destroyed. On the other hand, as an ideology, it has increased power between the Arab streets around us and the Palestinian people within the Islamic community.
“So the only way to defeat Hamas ideology is to show a better future.”
The latest developments followed indirect negotiations with Hamas about a ceasefire and a breakdown of the hostage deal, with Palestinian armed groups releasing three videos, including two Israeli hostages, who looked weak and thin.
The video of Rom Blaslavski and Evyatar David, who were kidnapped from Nova Festival on October 7, 2023, shocked and shocked the Israelis. David was proven to dig what he said was the grave in the underground tunnel.
Some speculate that the latest media announcement is a pressure tactic to try to force Hamas into a new deal.
Israel’s military said it already has 75% control of Gaza’s operation. But under the proposed plan, it will occupy the entire territory – now entering an area of more than 2 million Palestinians.
It is unclear what this means for civilians and for the actions of the United Nations and other aid organizations. About 90% of the 2.1 million people in Gaza are displaced, some are repeatedly displaced and live in overcrowded and severe situations. Humanitarian groups and UN officials said many were starving, accusing Israel of hindering the distribution of critical aid.
The Israeli military has previously retreated in some areas including the central Gaza region because there are life hostages there. Last year, after ground forces moved in, the kidnappers were taken captive by six Israeli hostages.
There was no formal response, but officials from the Palestinian authorities who ruled the occupied West Bank condemned Israel’s proposal and called on the international community to intervene to prevent any new military occupation.
Palestinians pointed out that far-right Israeli ministers openly advocate for the entire occupation and annexation of Gaza and ultimately wanted to establish new Jewish settlements there.
In 2005, Israel demolished settlements in the Gaza Strip and withdrew its troops from there.
But beside Egypt it maintains strict control over the passages into the territory.
The new career idea is a growing international action to restore bilateral solutions, a long-term international formula for resolving more than decades of Israel-Palestinian conflict. It envisions an independent Palestinian state created with Israel in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, while East Jerusalem is its capital.
Last week, the UK and Canada joined France to announce a conditional plan to recognize the Palestinian state.
Now, the Israeli Prime Minister is expected to meet with key ministers and military leaders to decide what to do next in Gaza. Israeli Army Radio said they will discuss the initial Army plan to revolve around the central refugee camp and carry out air strikes and ground raids.
Netanyahu said he will hold a full safety cabinet meeting this week.
Israeli media commentators expressed skepticism and raised concerns about actual military, political and diplomatic challenges. “Netanyahu has never gambled on this scale before,” Nahum Barnea wrote in Yedioth Ahronoth’s newspaper.
He pointed out that the Israeli Prime Minister has repeatedly vowed to achieve all his war goals.
“But after 22 months of bloody battles, it’s hard to take such promises seriously. It seems Netanyahu has only one goal in the Gaza War to extend the war.”
Israeli attacks on Hamas on October 7, 2023 launched a military offensive in Gaza, with about 1,200 people killed and another 251 were taken to Gaza people.
Hamas – The Ministry of Operations and Health said at least 61,020 Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces in Gaza.
