Brandon Fox, the attorney representing defendant Jermaine Matthews, told Fox News’ CB cotton, “This is not black, racist mobs attacking people. These are separate fights triggered by racial slander that end up pouring gasoline onto the fire.”
Fox also said his clients weren’t involved in smaller battles, but instead tried to break them down. According to Fox, Matthews only involved him when he was slapped by a “tall white man.”
Matthews faces charges of serious riots and assaults, with his margin set at $100,000 on Wednesday, According to Fox 19. But he returned to court Thursday to face two counts of felony assault and another for misdemeanor assault. According to FOX 19, the judge then set up new bonds, which would raise the total to $270,000.

Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge later revealed that only one of the approximately 100 people who witnessed the incident or participated in the fight was called the law enforcement department.
“When I say that, trust me, if the Cincinnati Police Department is notified in real time, our police will respond urgently and forcefully to protect lives,” Theetge said in a press conference on Friday.

Merriweather faces one felony assault, one misdemeanor assault and one aggravated riot count. His bonds totaled $500,000. Vernon also faces charges of felony assault, misdemeanor assault and aggravated riots, but her margin is set at $200,000.
Although Matthews’ attorney claimed his client did not know Merriwether, the detective said in court earlier this week that the two were coordinating with each other.
