Officials told local media that a man escaped from a French prison in a prisoner’s bag.

Broadcaster BFMTV said the man started an investigation after escaping from Lyon-Karbass prison in southeastern France on Friday.

The prison ceremony said in a statement to AFP News that he “used his prisoner liberating to hide himself in his luggage and then got out of the car.”

French media reported that escaped prisoners are serving several sentences and are also under investigation in cases related to organized crime.

Judicial investigations have also been opened to “escape as part of organized gangs and criminal conspiracy.”

Last month, the Lyon Bar Association expressed shock at the overcrowding of the Lyon-Corbas prison.

BFMTV reported that as of May 1, 2025, BFMTV reported that about 1,200 people were detained in prison, with 678 locations in the prison.
