Did you know that more than 1.2 billion smartphones are produced every year? Most of these devices end up in landfills, which leads to a growing global e-waste crisis. But what if there is a smarter, greener way to use them? Researchers now show us that old smartphones as data centers could be the next big thing for sustainable technology.

Old smartphones find new life while in mini data centers
A team from the Nordic Estonian Academy of Computer Science has found a creative way to give outdated phones new purposes. Instead of letting them collect dust or pollute the environment, these phones are repurposed in tiny data centers. By connecting old smartphones together, teams enable them to efficiently process and store data from research and community projects, an innovative idea with a significant impact.
How researchers turn smartphones into low-cost data centers
Turning an old smartphone into a data center is surprisingly affordable. The researchers removed the battery (to prevent chemical leakage) and used an external power source. They then connect the phones, put them in a 3D printed holder, and create a working prototype. These mini data centers have been tested in real-life situations, such as monitoring underwater tasks that often require expensive equipment.

Repeat the environmental impact of old phones
A cell phone that gets a second lifetime data center every time means less toxic material in the landfill and less demand for new electronics. This approach not only reduces electronic waste, but also saves valuable resources and reduces emissions from manufacturing. By extending the life of the equipment, we have taken a bigger step.
What can you do with your old smartphone
Before throwing away old phones, consider donating them to organizations that upgrade electronics. Your equipment can help the next wave of sustainable technology solutions. We can keep the landfill cleaner and support innovative research by rethinking our work on old smartphones.

Kurt’s key points
Offer a second chance for older smartphones, because data centers are an easy way we can all help reduce e-waste and support sustainable technology. Imagine that if more and more people are sending old smartphones as data centers instead of sending them to landfills, it will have a positive impact.
