As the night becomes more spacious, New York’s art world relaxes its seasonal slowdown, a crowd flocking to the streets outside Olympia Galleryfork and plate, for cake, An exhibition of edible art for a special exhibition of only one night. Take clues from Marie Antoinette’s infamous stench, if forged, “Let them eat cake,” the exhibition offers candy slices from more than 30 artists, transforming the east-side space under the two-story paved into a pop-up dessert salon.
In the gallery’s words, the idea of the show began with a “sarcastic response to the increasingly deteriorating global socio-political landscape”, but what emerged was a gentle meditation on the unity of pleasure, intensity and food. Oppose the naughty behavior of traditional “appearance without touch” gallery models, cake Invite viewers to break the rules by breaking bread.
Whether through color, texture, technology or concept, each dessert expands to the artist’s broader range through matte poetry, exploring topics such as anti-commodification, labor and decay. Heather BenjaminVibrant “cockroach cake” and Robin Williams‘Cartoon “Pie on Face” with a more “real or cake” sculpture edge – Leah Dixon’s towering “Bavarian Khalifa”, a middle track scene in Eli Hill and Stephanie Temma Hier’s “Cake Seafood Platter”. Outstanding additions also include Naomi Nakazato’s Foam Yuzu Crater and Madeline Bach’s “Orchid Summit II”.
Since its inception in 2015, the gallery, hosted by Ali Rossi, has been a preference to subversiveness and rebellion. On this summer night, Olympia brings this mission to new depths, intimacy, connections and communities abound: self-evident decisions that make the core unpopular, the works of many in front of you and the use of food as an unexpectedly and easily consumed medium of art (a kind that changes your behavior).
