South African court ruled that Zambia’s government could repatriate the body of former President Edgar Lungu, and despite his family’s objection, gave a funeral in his state.
The Pretoria High Court ruled that the Zambian state had previously applied to block families from private burying him in South Africa, and he died in June.
The state at that time believed that personal aspirations should not transcend greater public interests.
The dispute comes after a long dispute between Lungu and his successor, Hakainde Hichilema, whose family said he had said that Hichilema should not attend his funeral.
