Syrian Christians and Druze face persecution under Islamic government leadership

In recent days, heartbreaking reports have appeared in Syria: The cruel murder of innocent civilians – Many from a minority of Christians and Druze communities – allegedly consistent with the country’s forces Islamic regimenow led by interim President Ahmed Al-Sharaa, previously known for his Nom de Guerre “Abu Mohammed Al-Golani”, continued his role in Sunni Islamic Regional terrorist groups on the FBI’s most wanted list from 2013 to 2024.

As a Syrian American, I feel pain inside me at the growth of my ancestors’ homeland. As a doctor, I can’t get out of the human suffering behind every title. And, as someone who has warned the threat of Islamism for decades, I am sending an alarm: a new tyranny takes root in Syria, invisible in religious language, but as dangerous and destructive as the last one. After 55 years of BA’ATHIST military dictatorship, the importance of revealing, understanding and facing the early turning points of Syria cannot be exaggerated.

The world has been miserably accustomed to the pain of Syria. Since the Assad regime began its long revolution against anti-government protests in 2011, the country has become synonymous with war, displacement and losses. More than one million people were killed. More than 13 million people were displaced. Cities like my ancestors’ hometown of Aleppo have been reduced to rubble. However, from the ashes of Bashar al-Assad’s family, a new authoritarianism is emerging, this time not by secular fascism but religious supremacy.

We are now receiving reports of sectarian violence against religious minorities in Syria, especially Christians and Druze. These communities have existed in Syria for centuries, long before the rise of Islam and have suffered a wave of persecution. Now, they are targeted again, this time by groups that express sympathy for the new regime, whose leaders insist on an explanation of Sunni Islam, who argue that theological differences are not a diverse reality but a crime worthy of death.

This is not Islam. This is Islamism.

Islamism is a doctrinal explanation that promotes the rigid, theocratic vision of Islam as a political system. It aims to implement Sharia or Islamic law, not just as a personal or spiritual guide, but as a ruling authority in all aspects of public and private life. Islamists believe that citizens’ rights come from not God, but from Islam of their theocratic law. Islamists believe that their political power is sacred and that dissent is heresy and treason. This is not belief. It is fascism wrapped in the language of God.

For years, Islamists have mistakenly used themselves as an antidote to Assad’s tyranny. They tell the world that they are fighting for freedom, justice and democracy. But let’s be clear: the Islamists in power are no different from Assad. Their language and approach may vary, but their goals are the same: absolute control, achieved through fear, violence and repression.

Where Assad uses torture chambers and chemical weapons, Islamists use cult-like religious identities as swords and shields. Where Assads sow sectarianism in order to suppress dissent in the name of national unity, Islamists now do the same in the name of their “sacred truth.”

The result is the same: street corpses, family tearings and any future choking of freedom.

At the heart of this struggle is the principle we cherish in the United States, but it is becoming increasingly endangered worldwide: religious freedom. This is not just many people. This is the basis for all others. As I have said many times: Religious freedom is the tip of the spear of all freedoms. This is the “first freedom”. When it flourishes, society thrives. When it is crushed, all other freedoms come.

This is not an abstract philosophy. This is a reality of millions. When people are deprived of the freedom to worship and believe or not, according to their conscience, they are also deprived of the freedom to speak, gather, vote, and live without fear. Syria is a tragic case study, both secular and theocracy when religious freedom is replaced by ideological authoritarianism.

We call on the international community to condemn not only the latest atrocities in Syria, but also to take action. This means requiring an investigation into the now reported massacre. This means asking the government to be held accountable to Damascus and asking how its nascent government can protect the transparency of every minority and every citizen.

This means recognition and support of any regime that commits or commits such crimes. This means seeing Islamism as a dangerous political ideology, rather than a legal expression of religious belief, but an extremist perversion towards it.

In 2013, the Obama administration activated, authorized and celebrated the “democratic” election of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, laying the foundation for the return of the current leader Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to another military regime. Syria’s deep religious diversity may be a bastion of these duels fascism and game of power.

But that means standing with the Syrian people: Christians, Druzes, Sunnis, Shiites, Alawians, Kurds, Atheists, everyone who desires Syria can live peacefully, worship, worship, make up and speak their thoughts freely without fear.

President Donald Trump should immediately call on Damascus to raise comprehensive responsibility and transparency on the treatment of Sarah’s administration for minorities and his direct responsibility for the freedom of rule for religious minorities.

The Syrian people should have a better choice than the choice between Assad and Alas Golani. They deserve a future rooted in sectarianism and violence, but rely on freedom and dignity.

The world has ignored Syria once before, and the price is too terrifying. We can’t ignore it again.
