But Al-Awak said the Constitution would include protection of free expression and media.

The Syrian Democratic Commission, led by the Kurds, rejected the document on Friday and called for a rewrite, believing it was not far enough to protect many ethnic communities in Syria. It argued that the Constitution “reproduces authoritarianism in a new form” and said: “Even after Monday’s call for a ceasefire and merger of armed forces with the U.S.-backed Kurdish-led authorities, even after a breakthrough agreement reached on Monday, any constitutional declaration must be a true national consensus, not the result of a project implemented by a political party.
